SIKA DEER

Physical characteristics and distribution

Body length: 170-190 cm
Weight: 50-100 kg kg
Life expectancy: 11-14 years
Distribution: Asia, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, USA
Habitat: Forests with dense undergrowth
Species: not endangered in most countries

Appearance

The coat is brown and has numerous white spots, arranged in seven to eight longitudinal rows. In winter, these spots fade and are sometimes hard to spot, while in summer they are in clear contrast to the rest coat color. From the also spotted fallow deer the sika-deer is easily distinguished by the antlers, which do not form shovels and each bar has only two to five ends. In winter, a dense neck mane forms in both sexes.

Reproduction and development

The rut begins in late October and extends into November. The deer emit a long-drawn, swelling and whistling whistle, which ends in a gnawing and is repeated only after longer breaks. Wearing time 7 (on average 7 ½) months, dormancy during the winter, usually 1 cub.

Lifestyle and behavior

Adult males are loners for most of the year, while females and juveniles form associations of two to ten, rarely fifty. In early autumn, the males become territorial and begin to gather a harem of an average of twelve females. Other males get into the area, they are expelled, which can lead to fierce fighting. Sika deer prefer dense, underwood-rich forests as their habitat, but the adaptable animals also live in marsh and grasslands. They eat herbs, leaves and grasses, but do not eat as raw-fiber foods as red deer. In its East Asian homeland one differentiates numerous subspecies of the Sikahirsches. In Europe, it is usually impossible to determine to which subspecies the imported sika deer belonged; most of them date back to Japanese sika deer, but often different subspecies may have mixed with each other, and in some places there are even interspecific crosses with red deer. Above all, they are nocturnal, from evening to dawn on the way.
