Appearance
The long-legged steppe inhabitants attract attention especially through their necks: they reach a length of up to 2.5 meters in the animal kingdom unique dimensions and are decorated with a Stehmähne. On the head are two fur-lined forehead with black hair tufts at the ends. The coat is covered by light to dark brown, angular spots, which can look different depending on the subspecies. For example, the spots of the reticulated giraffe have frayed edges.
Reproduction and development
Giraffe bulls recognize by ‘Flehmen’ whether the female of their choice is ready to mate. In doing so, they lift the head slightly, push up the upper lip and open the mouth slightly. So they can better perceive the smell of the giraffe lady. About 14 to 15 months after mating a baby is born. The giraffe gives birth while standing and so the boy falls very roughly from about two meters high on the ground. Even after 30 minutes, most newborns – albeit still uncertain – can stand. The offspring will be nursed for about a year. After four to five years, it is even sexually mature.
Lifestyle and behavior
Giraffes are very sociable and live together in loose herds of 10 to 20 animals. There are rank orders within the groups, but the long necks are so peaceful that you hardly recognize them. If it comes to the fight between two bulls, it is carried out with the head and neck: they reach far and then hit the opponent with the head side against the neck. The loser is not driven out after the dispute, because the ranking is clear and he has to submit. The hooves are never kicked in these scuffles. For a good reason: The violent killer whales have killed many a cat and are far too dangerous to fight among their peers.
Feeding
Giraffes like to eat leaves, buds and especially like acacia leaves from the treetops. Giraffes, like our local cows, are ruminants. Their long neck allows them to reach the highest treetops. However, such a height also has disadvantages: To drink, they have to spread their front legs and buckle in the elbows to get to water. For this reason, the animals also rarely eat grass: it is just too complicated.
Hunting style, equipment and countries
Giraffes are found in many countries in southern Africa and are widespread in hunting areas, especially in Namibia and South Africa. The hunt for giraffes is usually done on the prowl. For giraffes, all calf species suitable for the big game are sufficient.
