Eurasian lynx are among the small cats and are the largest lynx species in the world. They have long legs and with 15 to 25 centimeters a very short tail. You can see them especially well on their whiskers and the hair tassels on the ear tips, which are called “ear brushes”. These can be four to five inches long. The fur of the elegant velvet paws is usually covered with dark, larger dots, but there are also specimens that have no pattern. The basic color of the hair coat can have all shades from gray-yellow to cinnamon-colored. Reproduction and development The mating season of the lynx is between February and April. To find a partner, the females leave their territory and set out to find the hangover of their choice. After mating they move back to their own territory. There, one to four boys are born around 70 days later. They are still blind for the first two weeks. Once small lynxes are about four weeks old, they also snack on their mother’s prey. The following spring, they are adults and set off to look for their own area.
Lifestyle and behavior
Lynxes are loners. Depending on the supply of prey, their territories are between 1,000 and 10,000 hectares. The borders of their “dominions” mark the shy cats with feces and urine marks; The males also leave memorable scratch marks on tree trunks. They have permanent living and resting places. Apart from the mating season, the predators are very revierreu and pull on fixed routes through their area. The biologist Bernhard Grzimek even writes that the animals turn back and try to reach their destination on a different path, if you change the appearance of their ways, the so-called lynx change, by cloths or inserted branches.
The elegant four-legged friends are very well equipped for their life in the forest: The ear brushes on the sensitive eavesdroppers serve for better sound localization. In research, it could be seen that animals lacking these hair tassels had less good hearing. Scientists say that lynxes can detect the rustle of a mouse from 50 meters away. The fascinating cats are also characterized by very sharp eyes – these are six times more sensitive than those of a human, which benefits the animals during their raids at dusk and at night.
Lynx are, like most big cats, stalkers. From as short a distance as possible they jump on their victim, grab it with the front paws and then kill it with a bite in the neck. If such a lightning strike goes awry, they will not pursue their prey, as they are fast but not persevering runners. Their favorite food is deer, wild boars, red foxes, martens and chamois, but they also eat rodents such as rabbits and mice, birds and larger insects. If the velvet paws can not eat the entire prey at once, they hide or bury the remains and return so often, until they have destroyed them.
Hunting style, equipment and countries
Lynxes occur in the Americas as well as in Central, Northern and Eastern Europe. They are hunted mainly in Canada and some states of the USA as well as in Russia. In most European countries the lynx is strictly protected so that a hunt is not possible. For the lynx middle caliber like 308 Win,
