Fitness and health

The anticipated physical and mental demands vary depending on the destination. For instance, embarking on a mountain hunt necessitates a unique level of readiness. If mountain hunting isn’t a regular activity for you, thorough physical conditioning is essential beforehand.

If you’re initiating training after a prolonged period of inactivity, it’s recommended to consult your family doctor in advance. Gradually escalate your training routine, ensuring that you’re capable of handling extended stalks, as well as ascents and descents, at least two weeks prior to the trip.

The more thoroughly prepared you are for the journey, the greater your ability to derive enjoyment from it!

  • Check your vaccination status well in advance of your trip (recommended by your local health authorities like the Robert Koch Institute in Germany)
  • When traveling to soecific locations in Africa, you should always assume that you need to protect yourself against malaria.

Selection of Weapon and Ammunition

When it comes to the rifle, caliber, and loading selection, it should align with the type of game and the hunting environment. However, it is generally recommended to use your familiar rifle, prioritizing the importance of achieving a clean shot.

In the context of hunting big game in Africa, a minimum caliber of .375 H&H is advised. Opting for more robust calibers like .416 Remington or Rigby and above can deliver greater power, provided that the rifle is well-managed.

For mountain hunting, versatile calibers such as .300 Win. Mag. or 8x68S are suitable, offering compatibility with various game types.

Hunting cloths selection

Adapting your clothing to the specific conditions of the hunting terrain is a wise consideration. For active hunts, breathable materials following the onion-skin principle are recommended, while in Africa, durable and uncomplicated cotton clothing is suitable, and winter hunts call for particularly warm attire.

Wearing functional underwear that efficiently wicks away perspiration is crucial. This ensures that you remain comfortable during breaks or extended periods of sitting after a trek, preventing discomfort from freezing.

It’s essential to carry a spare set of underwear to replace any soaked clothing with dry alternatives.

Footwear holds special significance for all active hunts, whether it be mountain boots or stalking boots in Africa. It’s imperative that shoes are well broken in to avoid the risk of blisters, which could significantly impede the hunting experience.
